Honestly, 17mm wrenches are almost more common than air, so having the right filter wrench isn't tough to do. I actually liked it because it has a nut on the filter to change it.
My bike didn't stop running or blow up during the 6k it had the K&N oil filter on my r12st. So, I called Autozone up and they said they could get the K&N oil filter (kn-164 - don't expect to be able to look it up at autozone) in 2 days. BMW independent mechanic is 45 miles in the same direction. My situation: BMW dealer is 60 miles away. I'd also never buy or use a K&N air filter. I've really liked my K&N oil filters in my car.
